Tensions have quietly flared behind the scenes of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as franchise owners express strong dissatisfaction over the inclusion of former Pakistan captain Salman Butt in the PSL 10 commentary panel.

Butt, once a celebrated cricketer, fell from grace after being convicted in the infamous spot-fixing scandal during the 2010 Lord’s Test, alongside fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir.

Despite a joint letter submitted by PSL franchise owners prior to the official announcement, requesting that no individual with a history of unethical conduct or criminal conviction be associated with the league, the organizers proceeded to add Salman Butt to the commentary team. While the letter did not directly name Butt, sources confirm it was clearly in reference to his controversial past.

Franchise insiders revealed that the decision was met with frustration, especially since they believe such moves could damage the league’s hard-earned reputation both locally and internationally. Interestingly, league officials responded by stating that Butt will only be doing Urdu commentary, which they implied would limit his global exposure.

Butt's reintegration into cricket roles has sparked debate on previous occasions. Last year, he was briefly appointed as an advisor to Chief Selector Wahab Riaz, but the decision was quickly rolled back after facing heavy public backlash. Additionally, Butt has recently hosted interviews with national players for PCB Digital, further stirring controversy among fans.

Presently, Salman Butt is the head of the Ghani Glass Institute of Cricket in Lahore. Interestingly, members of this organization are also on the PCB Governing Board, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

Although Butt's cricketing expertise cannot be denied, PSL owners worry that providing individuals with questionable pasts such high-profile platforms could tarnish the credibility of the league, especially during a time when the sport is fighting to retain the trust of fans.
