Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has made it clear that the provincial government will not allow the construction of canals under any circumstances.
Speaking during a press conference following the commemoration of former Prime Minister Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s death anniversary at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, Memon echoed the powerful words of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who also took a bold stand against proposed canal projects.
Bilawal, in his fiery speech, questioned the Punjab government’s silence over the source of water for these canals. “We won’t stand with Shehbaz Sharif; we stand with the people,” he said, making PPP’s position unmistakably clear.
He also warned that those trying to create chaos in the country would not be accepted. Bilawal stressed that PPP would not allow any step that harms Sindh’s interests, adding that the issue of canals was first raised by his party.
Sharjeel Memon went a step further, stating that some individuals, particularly Punjab’s Information Minister Azma Bukhari, seem eager to create friction between the PPP and the PML-N. “She may want a clash, but we want the government and the parliament to function,” he added. Memon criticised Bukhari for issuing misleading statements and advised her to study the Constitution.
Highlighting PPP’s legacy, Memon reminded reporters that Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had once staged a protest against the Kalabagh Dam, and that it was Asif Ali Zardari who gave the historic NFC Award, empowered provinces, and named Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “Zardari is one of the most competent politicians Pakistan has ever had,” he added.
Memon also lashed out at PTI, accusing it of funding religious seminaries that promoted terrorism. He called on KP's government to focus on law and order in their province instead of meddling in national issues.
PPP announced that it will hold a massive public gathering in Hyderabad on April 18, focusing on both the canal issue and terrorism. Memon said this rally would be historic, as it aims to send a united message from Sindh against injustice.
Reaffirming PPP’s commitment to democracy, he concluded, “We want to strengthen the parliament, and we’ll never allow any compromise on Sindh’s rights. Our leadership has always made the right decisions at the right time.”
