Pakistan is all set to step into the era of satellite-based internet connectivity as Starlink, the global satellite internet service by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is expected to begin operations in the country by November or December this year.
The exciting development was shared by Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology on Monday.
The minister revealed that there are no obstacles in the licensing process and the regulatory framework is in its final stages. She highlighted that satellite internet is still a relatively new technology in Pakistan, and therefore, multiple technical and legal perspectives need to be carefully evaluated.
To ensure this, a consultant has been appointed to draft the final regulations. Once this framework is completed, Starlink will be required to formally reapply for a full operational license.
Another company besides Starlink is interested in Pakistan's market as well. A Chinese company, Shanghai Spacecom, has applied to provide similar satellite-based internet services in Pakistan, again suggesting a competitive and bright digital future for Pakistan.
PTA Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeez-ur-Rehman updated the committee that although Starlink has a temporary license now, its full license is pending in the issuance stage. He made it clear that the license would be issued only after the completed regulatory framework comes into being.
The meeting ended on an optimistic note, with officials expressing hope that Starlink’s infrastructure will be rolled out in the coming months, allowing the service to become fully operational before the end of 2025.
