Federal cabinet approves 188% salary hike for ministers and advisors

Opposition parties rejected the wage raise

21 March 2025

The federal cabinet has given nod to a hefty hike in the salaries of federal ministers, ministers of state, and advisors, bringing their total monthly salary to Rs 519,000.

This decision represents a significant 188% increase in their salary above their prior earnings.

According to media sources, previous to this rise, federal ministers earned Rs 200,000 a month, while state ministers received Rs 180,000. With the passage of the new bill, federal ministers' salaries have increased by 159%, while ministers of state and advisors have seen an 188% boost.

The decision was finalised by circulating a summary among the federal cabinet. According to reports, revisions have been made to the Ministers and Ministers of State Allowances and Salaries Act of 1975, allowing for this significant compensation increase.

It's worth recalling that just two months ago, the Finance Committee overwhelmingly supported a plan to align parliamentarian pay and benefits with those of federal secretaries.

While opposition parties originally rejected the wage raise, National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf stated that 67 PTI legislators had explicitly demanded it in writing.
