PM denounces previous govt for reversing anti-terror gains

Says Pakistan’s economy suffered losses exceeding $150 billion due to the war on terror

18 March 2025

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday strongly denounced the previous government formed in 2018, accusing it of reversing the hard-earned achievements in Pakistan’s fight against terrorism.

Addressing a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, he lamented the absence of the opposition, calling it an irresponsible and regrettable move. He underlined that national security demands unity, and skipping such an important meeting is akin to neglecting sacred national responsibilities.

The premier paid tribute to martyrs and their families, stressing that they look towards the nation for recognition and solidarity. Highlighting the sacrifices made in the war against terrorism, he recalled the martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto, the sacrifices of the Bilour family, Mufti Naeemi, and countless others.

He also revisited the tragic APS attack of December 2014, stating that under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif, the entire nation united to eradicate terrorism. Pakistan’s armed forces, security agencies, law enforcement, politicians, and citizens played a decisive role in eliminating this menace.

Shehbaz Sharif revealed that Pakistan’s economy suffered losses exceeding $150 billion due to the war on terror. However, thanks to the sacrifices of the people and security forces, peace was restored, the economy stabilised, and the country began to thrive again. He blamed the 2018-2022 government for failing to sustain these achievements, claiming it halted the implementation of the National Action Plan, which led to the resurgence of terrorist activities.

Referring to the recent terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express, the Prime Minister praised the bravery of army officers and soldiers who saved hundreds of lives through their professional skills. He commended Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir and law enforcement agencies for their continued efforts in defeating the nefarious designs of enemies.

Shehbaz Sharif also warned against propaganda on social media, which he said aims to create a divide between the armed forces and the public. He assured that such malicious attempts have failed before and will fail again. Reaffirming Pakistan’s resilience, he declared, "Pakistan exists; so do we. If there is Pakistan, there is politics."
