Boost gut health with these five expert-backed habits

Learn how to nurture your digestion and overall well-being

17 March 2025

Getting healthy in your gut takes time and work, just like Rome wasn't built in a day. It relies on what you eat and how your body breaks it down.

A healthy food and way of life are very important, but experts have also shared five easy ways to make your gut health better. The things she suggests are these:

Every day, drink buttermilk

For 10 days, you should drink chaas, which is yoghurt. Because it is full of probiotics, chaas can help your stomach and keep your gut bacteria healthy. You might feel uncomfortable, though, if you can't handle lactose or have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). You should talk to a doctor first.

Cut up some vegetables to start your meal

Every night, start your dinner with cooked veggies. Soups and sautéed vegetables are good after that. This habit gives you fibre and important nutrients that can help you feel fuller for longer. But some veggies that are high in fibre might make your inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) worse.

Take probiotics twice a week

Adding fermented foods like dhokla, idli, or curd rice to your meals twice a week can help keep your gut bugs healthy. People who don't have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or who are sensitive to fermented foods should be careful with these foods.

Make tea with fenugreek and turmeric

Another habit that is good for your gut is making tea every morning with fenugreek (methi), turmeric (haldi), and pepper. People know that these ingredients can reduce inflammation and make you feel better. But eating too many of them could make your stomach hurt, so balance is important.

In the winter, eat Amla every day

Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is a natural way to get vitamin C and antioxidants that help your body digest food and stay healthy. Having one amla every day in the winter can help keep the good bugs in your gut in balance. But because it is acidic, it might make gut problems worse for some people.

Do all of these tips work?

A consultant dietitian and diabetes instructor named Kanikka Malhotra thinks these suggestions are usually good. She did stress, though, that people with IBS, IBD, or SIBO might have different body reactions to these tips. Before making big changes to your food, you should always get personalised help from a trained professional.

How to keep your gut healthy

Your gut is very important for nutrition, inflammation, and your health in general. By starting to do these easy things that work, you can improve the health of your gut. However, remember that there is no universally applicable health solution. Listen to your body and get help from a professional when you need it.
