Ishaq Dar on Canal Dispute

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said that misunderstandings regarding the canal construction from the Indus River will be cleared, and all objections raised by coalition partners will be addressed through dialogue and mutual understanding.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Dar clarified that a special committee, formed on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is actively reviewing concerns raised by allied parties, especially those related to development projects in Sindh.

He stressed that the government is committed to honouring all agreements and is consulting stakeholders to find a solution that safeguards the national interest.

Dar revealed that the issue of canals was first discussed in the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), but due to the sensitivity of the matter and possible misunderstandings, the agenda item was deferred.

He acknowledged that both sides—Sindh and Punjab—have been involved in heated exchanges, and certain elements in interior Sindh are exploiting the issue for their agendas.

He also commented on Uzma Bukhari’s controversial statement regarding the canals, suggesting it would have been better if her remarks had been more restrained. Dar added that the Prime Minister has already formed a committee and that he has spoken directly with the Sindh Chief Minister to ease tensions.

Reiterating the government’s stance, Dar emphasised the importance of national unity and said that issues should be resolved collectively. “If Punjab wishes to build something using its share of water, it should be allowed to do so,” he remarked, advocating a practical and cooperative approach.
