Nintendo has officially announced the Nintendo Switch 2, the much-anticipated successor to its best-selling gaming console, set to launch on June 5.
After months of speculation, fans finally got a detailed look at the upcoming device during a Nintendo Direct presentation, which drew over a million viewers.
The new console boasts enhanced graphics, superior audio, and a built-in chat function, allowing players to communicate while gaming. With a 7.9-inch display, 1080p resolution with HDR support, and up to 120fps frame rate, the Switch 2 marks a significant improvement over its predecessor. Another notable upgrade is the 256GB internal storage, addressing a long-standing concern for Nintendo users.
A key highlight of the presentation was the unveiling of Mario Kart World, a refreshed edition of the beloved racing game. Fans were thrilled to see stunning water effects, dynamic weather conditions, and vast racing tracks, showcasing the console's superior capabilities. Nintendo also introduced new titles, including Donkey Kong Bananza and Kirby Air Riders, alongside major third-party games like Elden Ring, Street Fighter 6, Cyberpunk 2077, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. Notably, The Duskbloods, a new multiplayer title by FromSoftware, was announced as a Switch 2 exclusive set for a 2026 release.
The controller enhancements include larger buttons and control sticks, while a new C button enables voice chat. This feature allows players to appear on-screen in a Zoom-like interface, with Nintendo promising advanced noise isolation technology. Additionally, both Joy-Cons can function as a mouse in supported games, bridging the gap between console and PC gaming.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will retail at £395 in the UK, with a bundle featuring Mario Kart World priced at £429. As one of the most successful gaming brands, Nintendo aims to replicate the phenomenal success of the original Switch, which sold over 150 million units worldwide. However, potential supply chain challenges and global trade uncertainties could impact availability. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa assured investors that the company has taken measures to avoid major shortages, ensuring a smooth launch for eager gamers.
