A court in India has sentenced self-proclaimed Christian preacher Bajinder Singh to life imprisonment for raping a woman in 2018.
The victim alleged that Singh assaulted her at his residence in Punjab, recorded the act, and later used the footage to blackmail her.
Singh, known for his evangelical-style preaching, gained fame for his dramatic healing sessions where he claimed to cure people of serious illnesses by laying hands on them. His Church of Glory and Wisdom, one of Punjab’s largest private churches, has branches worldwide and boasts a following that includes Bollywood celebrities. With over three million subscribers on YouTube, Singh has built a massive social media presence, sharing fiery sermons where he promises wealth and miraculous recoveries to his followers.
On Tuesday, after the verdict was announced, the victim’s lawyer, Anil Sagar, praised the ruling, calling it an "exemplary punishment" that would serve as a warning to others who exploit their social status for personal gain. Singh’s legal team has yet to comment on the decision, but he is expected to appeal the sentence in a higher court.
This is not the only legal trouble for the controversial preacher. Earlier this year, two more women accused him of sexual assault, prompting police investigations. One case was filed by a former disciple, while another woman alleged that he assaulted her after a prayer session. Singh has denied both allegations.
Beyond criminal charges, Singh’s church has also faced financial scrutiny. In January 2023, some of his religious institutions were investigated by India's income tax department over alleged financial irregularities.
Singh’s rise to prominence is as dramatic as his sermons. Born into a Hindu family in Haryana, he reportedly converted to Christianity while serving time in prison for an alleged murder case. His website describes his transformation, claiming he was led astray by "evil forces" before discovering faith through the Bible. He calls himself a “prophet” and offers healing services using holy oil and water.
Despite multiple controversies, Singh’s supporters continue to stand by him, dismissing allegations as "conspiracies by rival pastors". However, with mounting legal cases, his future remains uncertain as he faces a lifetime behind bars.
