Acclaimed Hollywood actor Val Kilmer, who gave us memorable performances in movies such as Top Gun, Batman Forever, and Heat, died at 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed he died of pneumonia in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Kilmer, diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, had had a tracheotomy, which impacted his voice and curtailed his acting career. Nevertheless, he made a stunning return in 2022, playing Iceman once again with Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick.

Kilmer's career lasted for decades, with highlights in The Doors—where he acted out the iconic Jim Morrison, Tombstone and The Island of Dr. Moreau. His outstanding ability and commitment to his work gained him respect throughout the film world.

After his death, accolades flooded in from co-workers and fans. Director Michael Mann, who collaborated with Kilmer in the scenes of Heat, acknowledged his phenomenal range and commitment as an actor. Francis Ford Coppola described him as the "most talented actor" he had known since high school.

Other actors Josh Brolin, David Thewlis, Will Kemp, and Josh Gad also mourned, recalling Kilmer as a genius, innovative, and fearless actor. Actor James Woods noted Kilmer's iconic performance of Doc Holliday in Tombstone as one of the greatest performances in Hollywood history.
