Saudi Arabia imposes limit on Umrah during Ramadan’s last 10 days

Worshippers advised to perform Umrah only once during this period

22 March 2025

As Ramadan enters its last phase, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has unveiled updated guidelines to ensure a smooth and spiritually fulfilling Umrah experience for the millions of worshippers expected in Makkah during the final ten nights of the holy month.

Given the surge in crowds, the ministry has urged all pilgrims to follow the prescribed procedures to maintain order and enhance the experience for everyone.

A recently released infographic highlights the importance of securing Umrah permits in advance and adhering to designated timings to prevent overcrowding around the Grand Mosque.

Worshippers have also been advised to perform Umrah only once during this period and offer their daily prayers in different mosques across Makkah rather than solely inside the Haram.

To ease congestion, the ministry has recommended using public transportation instead of private vehicles and instructed pilgrims to avoid blocking staircases and passageways to ensure smooth movement. These measures aim to enhance safety and comfort for all visitors.

Meanwhile, the General Authority for the Care of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has implemented a comprehensive operational plan to manage the influx of worshippers. Thousands of staff members and advanced cleaning equipment have been deployed to maintain cleanliness, regulate crowd flow, and provide essential services such as Zamzam water distribution, perfumed prayer areas, and logistical support like carts and escalators.

Authorities have revealed that the entire mosque can now be sanitised within just 35 minutes, while more than 20 rounds of perfuming using high-quality oud are conducted daily.

To enhance accessibility, special arrangements have been made for elderly and disabled pilgrims, including dedicated prayer spaces, luggage storage facilities, and a 24/7 childcare centre.

In addition, the government has introduced new arrangements for Itikaf, the spiritual retreat observed in the last ten nights of Ramadan. A unified digital platform has also been launched to facilitate transportation reservations, ensuring seamless movement for pilgrims throughout the city.
