A female student at a private university in Lahore, identified as Fatima, has regained consciousness and been removed from a ventilator following a suicide attempt, hospital authorities confirmed on Thursday.

She is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Lahore’s General Hospital. While still on oxygen support, her condition is now stable and responsive.

“The patient has regained consciousness and has been removed from the ventilator. Her condition has improved significantly,” said a hospital spokesperson.

Fatima has been able to communicate with her family, and her vital signs remain stable. Doctors are closely monitoring her condition and will reassess the need for spinal surgery if required.

Punjab Women Protection Authority Chairperson Hina Pervaiz Butt visited Fatima at the hospital, meeting both her and her family.

Butt emphasized that Fatima’s safety and well-being remain the top priority and confirmed that all aspects of the case, including claims of pressure over marriage and education, are under investigation.

Officials have begun a forensic review of Fatima’s mobile phone records to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Sources indicate that Fatima had wished to marry a man named Ahmed, but her family had opposed the marriage, urging her to focus on her studies. Distressed by the conflict, she reportedly attempted to take her own life.

The hospital has strengthened supervision of her care, with senior doctors providing continuous monitoring.

Meanwhile, the private university has formed an eight-member inquiry committee, and the medical board overseeing her treatment has been expanded to seven members to ensure comprehensive care.

The authorities have pledged a thorough investigation of all factors family, education, and personal pressures while maintaining a focus on Fatima’s health, recovery, and dignity throughout the process.
