Football legend Lionel Messi has shared a heartfelt glimpse into his life beyond the pitch, revealing that his dreams after retirement extend far beyond coaching.
Now 38 and playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), Messi is approaching the twilight of a remarkable career that has spanned more than two decades.
Speaking in an interview with Luzu TV, the Argentine icon made it clear that he does not envision himself on the sidelines as a coach. Instead, he hopes to shape football’s future from a different perspective as a club owner.
“I don’t see myself as a coach,” Messi explained. “I like the idea of managing, but I’d rather be an owner. I’d love to have my own club, start from the bottom, help it grow, and give young players the chance to develop and achieve something meaningful.
That’s what excites me the most.” Messi has already taken his first steps toward that dream. Alongside his long-time friend and former teammate Luis Suárez, he has launched a professional football club, Deportivo LSM, which currently competes in the fourth division of Uruguay’s football system.
In many ways, Messi appears to be following a path similar to Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham, who chose club ownership over coaching or punditry after retirement.
His former Barcelona teammate Gerard Piqué also embraced a similar journey through his ownership of Spanish side FC Andorra.
Despite thoughts of the future, Messi continues to shine on the field. This season, he claimed the MLS Most Valuable Player award for the second consecutive year a historic first in league history while also playing a pivotal role in guiding Inter Miami to league success.
As he continues to inspire fans worldwide, Messi’s vision reflects not just a love for the game, but a deep desire to nurture the next generation and give back to football in a lasting, meaningful way.
