Lionel Messi’s three-day visit to India, which began with a chaotic reception in Kolkata, has drawn attention not only for the massive turnout but also for the challenges faced in ensuring the safety and comfort of the football legend.

According to tour organiser Satadru Dutta, Messi was paid approximately INR 900 million for the tour, with INR 11 million contributed as tax to the Indian government.

Despite the substantial fee, Messi reportedly appeared unhappy due to the difficulties in managing crowd behaviour, as spectators repeatedly breached safety protocols, touching and hugging the athlete.

Authorities are investigating the disruptions at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, where some spectators vandalized property and caused disturbances.

The inquiry also highlighted lapses in crowd management and reported instances where local officials allowed personal acquaintances undue access to the footballer, adding to the challenges of ensuring a secure environment.

The tour reportedly involved significant expenses, including INR 100 million for arrangements, partially funded by sponsors.

Organiser Satadru Dutta also noted that INR 20 million in ticket and sponsorship proceeds has been frozen by authorities for further investigation.

While the event generated excitement among fans, the incidents underscore the importance of proper planning, security, and respect for public figures to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences for both visitors and spectators.

This situation highlights the humanitarian need for responsible crowd management, safety measures, and respect for personal boundaries, emphasizing that the wellbeing of both athletes and fans must be prioritized in large public events.
