Lionel Messi is set to be honoured with a 21-metre (70-foot) statue of himself in Kolkata, India, on Saturday as he embarks on a three-day visit that has ignited excitement among fans across the country.
The towering iron sculpture, depicting Messi holding the World Cup aloft, is part of his “GOAT Tour,” which will include stops in four Indian cities and a potential meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
For security reasons, the football superstar will unveil the monument virtually.
In Kolkata, a special “Hola Messi” fan zone has been created, featuring a life-sized replica of Messi seated on a throne and a recreation of his Miami home with mannequins representing his family.
Football enthusiasts have expressed their admiration, with Samir Nandy calling it “a dream come true” to see his idol and praising Messi’s resilience as the hallmark of his legendary career.
The statue, built in just 40 days, is the tallest ever created by sculptor Monty Paul, who called it a “matter of pride” to honour the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
During his visit, Messi will also meet Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan and former Indian cricket captain Saurav Ganguly.
Messi expressed his excitement about returning to India, recalling fond memories from his previous visit 14 years ago.
“India is a passionate football nation, and I look forward to meeting a new generation of fans while sharing the love I have for this beautiful game,” he said.
Following Kolkata, Messi will continue his tour in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, attending a concert in his honour and playing friendly matches.
The legendary forward recently won his second consecutive MLS Most Valuable Player award after leading Inter Miami to the MLS title and remains a pivotal figure as Argentina prepares to defend its World Cup crown in North America next summer.
