The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has dismissed Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti’s request to postpone local government elections in Quetta.

Bugti had filed the petition earlier this week, citing concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation and the ongoing suspension of internet services in the provincial capital.

In its written order on Wednesday, the ECP made it clear that the elections will be held according to the previously announced schedule. Polling in Quetta district is now set for December 28, 2025, with all institutions urged to cooperate fully under the Constitution.

“Every possible support must be extended to the bodies assigned the responsibility of conducting elections in Quetta,” the ECP stated. The commission also directed authorities to ensure foolproof security arrangements, emphasizing the safety of voters, candidates, the public, and polling staff. “Peaceful polling in Quetta must be ensured without interruption,” the order read.

However, not all members agreed with the decision. ECP member Shah Muhammad highlighted in a dissenting note that harsh winter conditions could negatively affect voter turnout. He warned that many people often migrate to other districts during the colder months, which could impact participation.

Despite these concerns, the ECP reaffirmed that the Quetta local government elections will proceed as planned, urging authorities to maintain law and order and safeguard voters throughout the process.
