Zhalay Sarhadi, a passionate advocate for animal welfare, recently took to social media to raise awareness following the demolition of a pet market near Lahore’s Data Darbar.
While her intentions are clearly rooted in concern for the safety and well-being of animals, she faced criticism from some who accused her of prioritizing animal rights over human issues.
In response, Zhalay Sarhadi clarified in an Instagram video that speaking up for animals does not mean she ignores other pressing matters.
“There are many things going on around us that are detrimental to animals’ safety and survival,” she said. “That does not mean that I don’t talk about women’s rights, Palestine, or Kashmir.”
She emphasized that all issues deserve attention and that focusing on one cause does not negate concern for others.
Throughout her career, Sarhadi has actively supported humanitarian causes. She condemned war between India and Pakistan earlier this year, celebrated the ceasefire, and advocated for peace.
She partnered with the Al-Khidmat Foundation to raise funds for flood-affected communities, called for justice following the murder of teenage content creator Sana Yousaf, and spoke out against misogyny in Pakistani society and the entertainment industry.
Given her consistent engagement with social and humanitarian causes, it is clear that Zhalay Sarhadi’s advocacy for animal rights comes from a place of compassion and does not diminish her commitment to human struggles.
She reminds us that one can care deeply about both human and animal welfare, highlighting the importance of empathy in all forms.
