Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan recently sparked a thoughtful conversation on modern relationships during the We The Women event in Mumbai.

Known for her candid views, she expressed that she does not wish her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, who is soon turning 28, to get married.

She described marriage as an “outdated institution,” a statement that quickly drew widespread attention on social media.

In conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt, Jaya explained that today’s world is vastly different from the one she grew up in, with young people being independent, aware, and capable of making their own choices.

She emphasized that older generations should allow youngsters the freedom to decide their paths without pressure. Jaya also pointed out that emotional security and meaningful relationships do not necessarily require legal validation through marriage.

Using humor, she compared marriage to the famous “Delhi ka laddoo,” saying, “Either way it’s difficult. But just enjoy life!” Her remarks highlight that happiness and personal fulfillment should take precedence over societal expectations.

Navya, daughter of Nikhil Nanda and granddaughter of Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, has already carved her own path, co-founding the women’s health platform Aara Health, pursuing an MBA at IIM Ahmedabad, working on social initiatives, and co-writing her first book.

Jaya’s comments are particularly notable given her own long-standing marriage to Amitabh Bachchan, which recently completed 52 years, making them one of Bollywood’s most iconic couples.

On the professional front, Jaya will next appear in Dil Ka Darwaaza Khol Na Darling, alongside Wamiqa Gabbi and Siddhant Chaturvedi.
