FIFA bends rules for Ronaldo after Trump meeting

FIFA has announced a special ruling regarding a red card issued to Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, just days after his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The International Federation of Association Football decided to reduce Ronaldo’s suspension from the standard three-match ban to a single match, noting that this was the first red card of his long international career spanning over two decades.

Ronaldo had received the card for violent conduct in a recent match against Ireland, which could have caused him to miss Portugal’s opening game at the 2026 World Cup.

Thanks to this ruling, Ronaldo is now eligible to play in Portugal’s first World Cup match, having already served his suspension during the subsequent match against Armenia.

Portugal’s head coach, Roberto Martinez, had previously defended Ronaldo, emphasizing that his behavior did not constitute violent conduct.

FIFA clarified that should Ronaldo commit a similar offense in the future during the probationary period, the remaining suspension will be applied immediately.

The decision comes shortly after Ronaldo met with President Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during the Crown Prince’s visit to the United States.

While the ruling has attracted attention, it underscores the principle of context and fairness, acknowledging the extraordinary career of an athlete who has long inspired millions around the world.
