Pakistan, EU strengthen strategic partnership in Brussels talks

Pakistan and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to a broad-based, multidimensional, and forward-looking partnership rooted in shared values, the UN Charter, multilateralism, and principles of mutual respect and cooperation, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Saturday.

The declaration came during the seventh Strategic Dialogue between Pakistan and the EU, co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and EU High Representative and Vice President Kaja Kallas in Brussels.

According to the FO, the meeting offered a comprehensive review of Pakistan–EU relations, building on the positive momentum of recent high-level engagements and ongoing institutional interactions. Both sides emphasized the importance of deepening trade and investment ties, including leveraging the EU's GSP+ arrangement, as a driver for sustainable growth, export diversification, job creation, and mutually beneficial economic opportunities.

The dialogue also provided a platform to exchange views on regional and global developments, including South Asia, Afghanistan, the Middle East, and wider geopolitical issues. Pakistan and the EU underlined the need for coordinated efforts to promote peace, stability, sustainable development, and tackle global challenges such as climate change and connectivity.

Both parties agreed to strengthen cooperation under the Strategic Engagement Plan (SEP 2019), advance ongoing dialogues, and explore concrete avenues for expanding collaboration in the coming years.

On the sidelines of the 4th EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum in Brussels, Deputy Prime Minister Dar engaged in separate discussions with various international leaders. He held a “constructive” exchange with Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdusalam Abdi Ali, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to regional stability and enhanced cooperation.

Dar also met with Ambassador Andrea Orizio, Head of Delegation for Italy, to discuss strengthening Pakistan-Italy ties, enhancing economic engagement, and working together within broader Pakistan-EU frameworks. Additionally, he held talks with Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, agreeing to deepen bilateral cooperation in trade, connectivity, and climate resilience.

Both sides emphasized the importance of regular engagement, including through multilateral platforms, to further advance shared priorities and strengthen their strategic partnership.
