The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday suspended the University of Karachi’s notification that had cancelled the law degree of Islamabad High Court (IHC) judge Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, offering temporary relief in a matter that has raised serious concerns over fairness and due process.
A two-member bench comprising Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro and Justice Mohammad Abdur Rahman heard the plea filed by Justice Jahangiri, who sought to have the university’s notification declared null and void.
The court also restrained the varsity from taking any further action based on the recommendations of its Syndicate and Fairmen’s Committee.
Appearing before the court, University of Karachi Registrar Professor Imran Siddiqui explained that the varsity had only received the notice two days ago and requested additional time to submit a reply.
Barrister Salahuddin, representing Justice Jahangiri, appealed for suspension of the notification until a formal response was filed.
Acknowledging the registrar’s request, the court adjourned proceedings while ensuring no immediate adverse action is taken.
The case underscores the importance of transparency, procedural fairness, and the protection of individual rights in institutions of higher learning, particularly when such decisions carry profound personal and professional consequences.
