Snapchat has announced the end of unlimited free storage for its Memories feature, a decision that is sparking mixed reactions worldwide.

For years, users cherished the ability to revisit their captured moments — some going back to 2016 — without worrying about space.

Now, however, those with more than 5GB of saved content will need to pay to keep their digital memories intact.

Snap revealed that over 1 trillion Memories have been saved since the feature launched.

While most users fall under the 5GB limit and won’t be affected, those with larger collections will be offered new paid plans — from 100GB and 250GB with Snapchat+ to 5TB with Snapchat Platinum.

The company has also promised a 12-month grace period for excess content.

Screenshots circulating online suggest pricing could start at 2.99 AUD per month for 100GB, but many users have voiced frustration, saying they may abandon the app if cherished memories are locked behind a paywall.

This shift highlights the emotional value of digital archives. For millions, Snapchat Memories aren’t just files — they are fragments of youth, family, friendships, and love stories that deserve to be safeguarded, not commodified.
