Authorities had to halt all flight operations at Sialkot International Airport on Wednesday due to the region's severe flooding.
Airport officials claim that after heavy rains caused extensive water buildup inside and outside the airport grounds, runway safety and passenger access routes were seriously jeopardized.
All flights, both inbound and outbound, were consequently either cancelled or diverted to other airports.
Major roads in Sialkot have already been submerged by the ongoing monsoon spell, which has also cut off access to dozens of villages and interfered with vital services like internet and power.
The past 24 hours have seen record-breaking rainfall, overwhelming low-lying areas and drainage systems, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Airport authorities, in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and disaster response teams, are working to clear floodwaters and assess infrastructure safety. No timeline has yet been announced for the resumption of flight operations.
Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for updates or rebooking options.
The closure of the airport, a key international gateway for exporters and travellers in the region, is expected to impact trade logistics and travel schedules in the coming days.
