Chinese Firms May Launch Satellite Internet in Pakistan After Starlink

After the entry of American tech giant Starlink, several Chinese companies have now shown interest in launching satellite internet services in Pakistan.

In response, the government has stepped up efforts to finalize the legal and technical groundwork needed to allow such services.

According to official sources, the Pakistan Space Activity Regulatory Board (PSARB) has submitted a detailed report outlining proposed rules and licensing conditions for satellite-based internet operations. The report has been shared with key government institutions, including the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The PTA is now reviewing the draft regulations and recommendations provided by the consultants. After this review, the PTA will share its feedback with PSARB, which will help finalize the new rules.

The draft rules have also been circulated among other government bodies to gather more input. Officials say that all feedback is being carefully considered to make sure the new guidelines are complete and effective.

A senior official highlighted that the government is taking a cautious approach: “We are focusing on proper planning instead of rushing into implementation. Technical challenges must be addressed before licenses are issued,” the source said.

One of the most exciting developments in the upcoming policy is the possible inclusion of direct satellite-to-mobile phone connectivity. If approved, this feature could provide high-speed internet in remote and underserved areas of Pakistan, where traditional telecom networks struggle to reach.

The PSARB is aiming to finalize the satellite internet regulations within a month. Once approved, the licensing process for companies—including the interested Chinese firms—will officially begin.
