In a major development, seven senior officers of the Bangladesh Air Force, including two Air Vice Marshals and an Air Commodore, have been court-martialed and dismissed from service for allegedly collaborating with India’s intelligence agency, RAW. The unprecedented action underscores growing concerns about foreign influence and internal instability in Bangladesh’s defense establishment.
The development comes as the country marks one year since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whose regime was toppled by a massive student-led uprising on August 5, 2024.
What was once the heavily fortified Ganabhaban Palace, Hasina’s official residence, is now being converted into a national museum, a stark reminder of what many in Bangladesh view as one of the darkest chapters in its democratic history.
Photos of jubilant crowds climbing the palace’s rooftop after Hasina’s dramatic escape via helicopter to India became symbolic of her downfall. Graffiti reading “Freedom,” “We want justice,” and “Killer Hasina” remains untouched on the palace walls, now considered part of a preserved historical exhibit.
The transitional government hopes the museum will serve as a lesson in accountability, showcasing how the people rejected authoritarianism.
Accusations of Crimes Against Humanity
Hasina, 77, continues to face charges of crimes against humanity in Dhaka for alleged human rights abuses during her final months in office. According to UN estimates, up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August 2024 during her government’s brutal crackdown on dissent. She has defied court orders and has not appeared for trial, denying all allegations.
The current caretaker government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has pledged to restore democratic institutions ahead of elections scheduled for early 2026. Speaking about the museum, Yunus stated it would serve to “preserve memories of her misrule and the people’s anger when they removed her from power.”
Bangladesh remains in a state of political transition, with public demand for justice and transparency shaping the national discourse.
