TTP and tribal elders continue peace talks amid security concerns in Bajaur

Third round of dialogue sees delegations meet at KP CM House; security forces urged to maintain presence in conflict zones

Following a fragile ceasefire between Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and tribal elders in Bajaur, peace talks entered a critical phase on Sunday as delegations from both sides arrived at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister’s House for continued negotiations.

The peace initiative, known locally as the Bajaur Aman Jirga, is being led by tribal elder Sahibzada Haroon Rashid. Representing the TTP is Maulana Ilyas Muhajir, the group’s operational commander for Wilayat Bajaur.

This marks the third round of direct talks between the militant group and tribal leaders. Earlier sessions were held in Mamund Tehsil, an area previously affected by recurring militant activity. Sunday’s discussions reportedly focused on urging TTP members to either return to Afghanistan or withdraw to remote mountainous areas if they intend to persist in launching attacks on state institutions.

Local sources express concern that tribal leaders have advised security personnel to ease their presence at check posts in the region, citing the “positive tone” of the meetings. However, experts warn that abandoning security positions prematurely could lead to a resurgence in militant violence, especially if the peace process collapses.

There is no confirmation yet of a written agreement between the parties, and military officials have not officially commented on the ongoing talks.
