In a landmark agricultural breakthrough, scientists from Pakistan and China have jointly developed a high-yield hybrid rice seed named PU786, which could revolutionize rice production in Pakistan. The new seed, a product of ten years of collaboration between Punjab University and Wuhan University, is Pakistan’s first-ever Honglian hybrid rice variety.
Cleared by the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), PU786 has demonstrated its potential to increase per-acre yield from 1,600kg to a staggering 5,600kg, a game-changing leap for the country’s rice sector.
Resilience in the Face of Climate Challenges
What sets PU786 apart is its resistance to bacterial diseases, heat stress, and pests, making it particularly suited to Pakistan’s increasingly unpredictable climate. The hybrid variety has been successfully tested across four provinces, including Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.
A Milestone in Pak-China Agricultural Cooperation
The development of PU786 marks a significant milestone in the expanding agricultural partnership between Pakistan and China. As the two nations deepen cooperation under the broader China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework, scientific collaborations like PU786 signal a shift toward technology-driven food security solutions.
Boost to National Food Security and Farmer Income
Pakistan’s rice exports are a vital source of foreign exchange, and innovations like PU786 can greatly enhance national food security while increasing farmer income. Officials hope this hybrid will reduce dependency on imported seeds, improve yield per acre, and help Pakistan meet its domestic and export needs more efficiently.
