A senior Pakistani army officer was martyred during an intelligence-based operation against Indian-sponsored terrorists in Balochistan’s Awaran district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed on Wednesday.

According to the military’s media wing, the operation was launched after receiving credible intelligence about the presence of terrorists affiliated with the Indian-backed proxy group Fitna al-Hindustan.

“During the conduct of the operation, own troops effectively engaged the terrorist hideout. As a result, three Indian-sponsored terrorists were sent to hell,” the ISPR statement read.

However, in the intense exchange of fire, Major Syed Rabnawaz Tariq, 34, embraced martyrdom. Hailing from Muzaffarabad, the brave officer was leading the mission from the front and fought gallantly before making the ultimate sacrifice.

Following the clash, a sanitisation operation was initiated in the area to clear it of any remaining threats. “Pakistan’s security forces remain resolute in eliminating terrorism, especially that which is being directed by foreign proxies. The sacrifices of our brave soldiers only strengthen our resolve,” the military added.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has seen a troubling rise in cross-border attacks, particularly in provinces like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Recent data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) reveals a 5% increase in militant incidents in May 2025 compared to April. Despite mounting tensions with neighboring India, extremist groups have largely remained contained, but the growing activity in border regions is a serious concern.
