The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled the latest ODI player rankings, and it's a mixed bag of emotions for Pakistan cricket fans.
On one hand, star batter and former captain Babar Azam continues to carry the nation's hopes, holding firm at second place in the ICC ODI player rankings. However, the rankings also reveal some gaps Pakistan must address to compete at the highest level.
India's young sensation Shubman Gill remains the world’s top-ranked ODI batter, maintaining his fine form. Indian captain Rohit Sharma holds on to the third spot, keeping the rivalry intense at the top. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan batters have shown significant improvement, with Charith Asalanka rising to sixth place and Kusal Mendis making a massive jump of ten positions to enter the top 10 at number ten. Their progress highlights Sri Lanka’s strong recent ODI performances.
On the bowling side, Sri Lanka continues to dominate. Maheesh Theekshana retains his position as the number one ODI bowler, while Wanindu Hasaranga climbs 11 spots to eighth place. Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi, however, saw a minor setback, slipping one place to 12th. India’s Ravindra Jadeja also dropped slightly to ninth.
The biggest concern for Pakistan cricket comes in the all-rounders’ department. Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai leads the ICC ODI player rankings for all-rounders, thanks to his consistent performances with both bat and ball. Unfortunately, no Pakistani all-rounder features in the top 10, exposing a major gap in team balance and versatility.
While Babar Azam remains Pakistan's shining light, his solo presence in the top ranks underscores the need for more players to step up. The absence of impactful Pakistani all-rounders on the global stage is a reminder that the team must work hard to build a stronger, well-rounded squad before major international tournaments.
