In a major step towards strengthening bilateral ties, Pakistan and Azerbaijan have signed $2 billion worth of investment agreements, marking a historic leap in their economic partnership.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed the agreements during his official visit to Shusha, Azerbaijan, on July 4, where he witnessed the signing ceremony alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
Describing the meeting as “excellent and result-oriented,” PM Shehbaz congratulated President Aliyev on hosting a successful summit and expressed deep gratitude for Azerbaijan’s significant investment commitment. He called the Pakistan Azerbaijan investment deals a breakthrough that would open new doors of strategic and economic cooperation between the two brotherly nations.
The agreements, signed by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov, are set to channel $2 billion into Pakistan’s economic sector. This signing is expected to elevate trade and investment ties between the two countries to unprecedented levels.
Both nations also agreed to broaden their collaboration in critical areas such as addressing glacial melting and tackling environmental challenges, showing a shared vision for sustainable development. Future plans include expanding investment cooperation and enhancing cultural, trade, and economic ties under the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) framework.
During his trip, Prime Minister Sharif also met with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 17th ECO Summit. The two leaders reviewed progress on past commitments and discussed recent regional tensions. PM Shehbaz strongly condemned Israel’s aggression against Iran, lauding Tehran's restraint and its efforts toward a peaceful ceasefire. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity with Iran in pursuit of regional peace through dialogue and diplomacy.
Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz held a detailed meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan. Both leaders emphasized the need to boost cooperation in trade, defence, energy, and regional connectivity, vowing to take Pakistan-Türkiye ties to greater heights.
The signing of the Pakistan Azerbaijan investment deals follows months of behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts, including high-level coordination between Pakistan’s deputy prime minister, its diplomatic mission, and Azerbaijani officials. A final, comprehensive agreement is expected to be inked during President Aliyev’s anticipated visit to Pakistan.
