Mild tremors rattled parts of Malir in Karachi once again early Thursday morning, sparking fresh concerns among residents.
According to the Seismic Monitoring Centre, Karachi experienced a minor earthquake at around 7:54 AM, with a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale and a depth of 40 kilometres.
The epicentre of the tremor was traced to approximately 11 kilometres northeast of Malir. This latest quake marks the 29th seismic event recorded in the Malir in Karachi area since June 1, highlighting a concerning uptick in geological activity.
Earlier in the day, another tremor measuring 2.1 magnitude shook southern Malir, at a depth of just five kilometres. The tremor led to brief panic, with residents rushing out of homes and buildings fearing stronger aftershocks.
Over the past five days alone, 27 minor tremors have been documented in different parts of the city. The frequent shakes have made seismic awareness a hot topic in households across the metropolis.
While no casualties or property damage have been reported so far, authorities have issued an advisory, warning that more earthquakes in Karachi are possible within the next three to four days. Citizens are urged to stay alert and follow safety guidelines in case of further tremors.
The recent surge in small earthquakes in Karachi—especially in the Malir area—has raised questions about whether the city is entering a new seismic phase. Experts recommend taking precautions even during minor tremors, as a series of small quakes can sometimes indicate deeper tectonic movement.
