In a landmark moment for Pakistan’s military history, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir was formally awarded the prestigious Baton of Field Marshal during a grand ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Islamabad on Thursday.
The event marked a rare and historic recognition of military excellence and leadership.
President Asif Ali Zardari, alongside Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, handed over the ceremonial baton to General Asim Munir, who now carries the title of Field Marshal—an honor reserved for only the most distinguished military figures.
The ceremony was a high-profile affair, attended by a wide array of dignitaries including Vice Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, federal cabinet members, provincial governors, service chiefs, foreign diplomats, and senior military and civil officials.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Field Marshal Munir for his exemplary service to the nation. “Today, we gather to pay tribute to a true patriot. The entire nation salutes Field Marshal Asim Munir for his unwavering commitment, strategic leadership, and historic role in defending Pakistan’s sovereignty,” the Prime Minister said.
He lauded the contributions of Pakistan’s armed forces in countering aggression and defending the nation’s borders. “We forced the aggressor to back down. Under Field Marshal Munir’s leadership, our forces crushed the enemy’s arrogance and stood tall in the face of adversity,” he added.
Highlighting General Munir’s pivotal role during Operation Bunyān Mursūs, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the Field Marshal’s courage and determination during times of national crisis. “His leadership has been a source of strength and unity for the nation. He has truly made history,” the Prime Minister said.
The honor of being awarded the Baton of Field Marshal places Asim Munir among the elite ranks of Pakistan’s military legends. His journey, marked by integrity, discipline, and unshakable resolve, is now etched in the annals of national pride.
