Shan Masood Likely to Be Removed as Pakistan Test Captain

Pakistan’s cricket leadership is set for another major shake-up as reports suggest Test captain Shan Masood may soon be relieved of his duties.

Sources close to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) indicate that the decision has already been finalized, with an official announcement expected soon.

Shan Masood, who was appointed Test captain in November 2023, has struggled to deliver consistent results. Under his leadership, Pakistan played 12 Test matches, winning only 3 and losing 9. His tenure has seen a string of disappointing performances, including series whitewashes against Australia, Bangladesh, and South Africa. A drawn series against the West Indies was the only glimmer of stability during a turbulent campaign.

Adding to the concerns, Pakistan’s run in the ICC World Test Championship was equally underwhelming. The team finished at the bottom of the points table, landing in ninth place—a position far below expectations for a nation with a rich cricketing history.

With the arrival of new head coach Mike Hesson, the PCB is reportedly aligning its leadership structure to better suit the team’s future goals. Hesson’s input is expected to play a significant role in naming the next Test captain.

All eyes are now on Saud Shakeel, the 29-year-old middle-order batter who currently serves as vice-captain. His calm demeanor and consistent performances have earned him respect in the dressing room and among fans. If promoted, Saud would bring a fresh perspective to the role and an opportunity to rebuild Pakistan's red-ball ambitions.
