Wasim Akram Under Fire for Speaking Up After Ceasefire Announcement

In the wake of the recent India-Pakistan military escalation, former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali has openly criticized legendary fast bowler and ex-captain Wasim Akram for what he called a “delayed show of solidarity” with the Pakistan Army.

The backlash erupted after Wasim Akram posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We all stand with our armed forces. They have responded to the enemy’s aggression.” Akram further added, “As they say, war begins when dialogue fails. Talks and conflict resolution across the border are crucial for the youth’s future. Peace is what we all want. Pakistan Zindabad!”

However, the timing of Akram’s message drew sharp criticism as it came after a formal ceasefire had already been announced between India and Pakistan. Many felt that his support came too late, especially during a time when the country needed strong voices.

Reacting strongly, Basit Ali didn’t hold back. “Staying silent during the most critical moments and speaking up only after things settle—how is that bravery?” he questioned in a blunt statement. “Cricketers must speak out in times of national difficulty, not afterwards.”

Social media users echoed Basit’s sentiments, with many accusing Akram of offering “performative patriotism” rather than timely support.

Meanwhile, in a positive turn for cricket fans, the announcement of a ceasefire between the two nations has revived hopes for the completion of the 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Sources reveal that the remaining eight matches are likely to be held in Rawalpindi, while foreign players have been advised to stay in Dubai until further notice.

The situation appears to be stabilizing, but the debate surrounding celebrities' roles in national crises continues to stir strong emotions across Pakistan’s digital landscape.
