The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has taken a firm stand against the proposed construction of controversial canals, declaring that no matter the circumstances, there will be no compromise on this critical issue.
Addressing a charged crowd in Tando Jam, Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the canal project is not just a development plan but a matter of life and death for over 70 million people of Sindh.
“Some individuals are playing politics over this, but let me be clear: PPP will never back down on this issue,” said Memon, emphasizing that President Asif Ali Zardari has no authority to approve such a project, dismissing ongoing propaganda against him.
He announced a massive rally in Hyderabad on April 18, where Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will directly address the people and explain the potential harm of the canal project. Memon said the rally would serve as a "referendum against the canals."
PPP Women’s Wing President Faryal Talpur echoed this stance, declaring, “We won’t let new canals be built. You want to turn Sindh into a desert to green another desert — how is that fair?”
Meanwhile, PPP Sindh President Nisar Khuhro, speaking to media in Matiari, reaffirmed that there is no division within the party on this issue. “Bilawal Bhutto’s position is the party’s position,” he said.
He criticized the federal government’s repeated attempts to impose controversial projects on Sindh, referencing both the Kalabagh Dam and the current canal plan. “Our cultivated lands are already starved of water. How does building new canals make sense?” he asked.
Khuhro warned the federal government that the people of Sindh stand united against these initiatives and that the April 18 rally will be a defining moment in this struggle.
With emotions running high and unity within the ranks, PPP is gearing up to transform the upcoming rally into a powerful display of Sindh's resistance.
